On December 3rd , 2021, we launched the festivities events which introduced a number of new backend functions, features and changes.
The following is a evaluation from the our team, showing how our event went, and also the final results, conculding this event series!
What went well
- The event backend worked as intended, and allowed us to proceed into preparing the event and its connected economy changes. In this process we have also tested some new ways to influence the economy on a much finer scale, to take precautions against economy braking planes, or identify economy problems in general.
- Many event functions worked straight out of the box, yet some had to be adjusted during the event.
- Preparations for the high demand phase went well, which has allowed us to pre scale some services, while down scaling other’s. During the holidays we have experienced up to 200% more traffic than usual, all of which did not cause any issues, longer time to render, or even on the more complicated compute tasks.
- The continued operations on our infrastructure, backend and also physical servers really paid off.
What did not go so well
- We identified some issues on our event planning, causing an increased load on our team during the final phases of our festivities, and also learned many things which will get handy, once we can hold physical events again.
- We would also have liked to release event results in a faster manner, yet we are still facing some issues on the planning side and also bottlenecks on administrative workforce. Furthermore, we decided, that we will not hold an event this scale in this timeframe again.
- Some systems could not make it into the event due to issues caused by many factors, causing some website features to be cut completely
- Some systems did not work as intended right out of the box, causing additional workload, lowering workforce on other very important to-do’s
What we will do differently in the future
We can always improve on aligning on multidiscipline features so that they’re delivered in time for a release window and give the best initial and postmortem experience to the player.
- There will be no more major events during high peak and demand phases
- Events will be planned and conceptionized in Q1 of each year, allowing for better planning
- We will deploy more event systems,
- We will work on avoiding human bottlenecks, for example increasing our international support staff
- If too many deliverables fail, we will not conclude with an event, and postpone, or delay it.
Final Thoughts
Moving forward, we will continue to learn new stuff each and every day, which is very important for both our user base, and also for us, as we try to offer new and exciting ways to enhance virtual aviation!
This year, we will work on being more transparent on most deliverables, and also show what an incredible challenging task it is, to run such a large operation, and keep it steady while also working
on many other areas, for example new team members, and providing low wait times, and personal support, for each and every member of our community.
The entire FTW-Team wants to thank everyone for participating, and you will hear from us soon!
Winter 21 - The Bet
Slowly calm returns in and around Rovaniemi.
The presents have long since been flown out and distributed; the last tidying up in the large toy workshop is now also coming to an end.
A lot of work lies behind the Christmas helpers and the many FTW pilots.
But not only the Christmas magic could be sprayed again this Christmas; there was also the bet with the Grinch to win.
And, as it soon turned out, this was not such an easy task.
Not only Santa personally thanks every pilot who supported the project in any way, but also all the promoted helpers and organizers. And, as Santa indicated, there will probably be a revenge in 2022.
So it is not over yet!
What a party!
Everywhere you looked you could see the escorts and team members enjoying themselfes and pools were filled with “snow”.
Every corner was celebrating exuberantly and absolutely nothing could remind you of the horrible, old, rotten Christmas.
Just the way the Grinch imagined it.
The celebration seemed never-ending, rewarding all the stressful days of preparation and organization.
A small smile flitted across the Grinch’s face as he thought of the bet with Santa.
If that didn’t make the winner with the help of the many FTW pilots, what could?
With great satisfaction, the Grinch now drops exhausted into his big armchair in his modest dwelling near Medellín.
The work is done; finally, it’s wonderfully boring again.
He quietly thanks every pilot who has supported the project in any way.
And he is already pondering whether and how he will stand up to Santa at the next Christmas.
So it is not over yet!
